Phuket Thailandknown as the "Pearl of the South" is one of the most spectacular holiday destinations worldwide! Phuket is Thailand’s largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by two bridges. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket is approximately 880 km south of Bangkok. The island total length, from north to south, is 48 km long and 21 km wide. The name Phuket comes from the word bukit in Bahasa Malayu and Bahasa Indonesia which means "hill", as this is what the island looks like from a distance. In the old days Phuket made its money from tin mining and from rubber. Still today there are a lot of rubber trees and in fact the tapping of rubber trees is part of various tours. Tin mining has not occurred in a few decades, but with the arrival of mass tourism, Phuket is generating more income for Thailand than it ever has.
