Phuket is Thailand’s largest island. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by two bridges. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket is approximately 880 km south of Bangkok. The island total length, from north to south, is 48 km long and 21 km wide. The name Phuket comes from the word bukit in Bahasa Malayu and Bahasa Indonesia which means "hill", as this is what the island looks like from a distance.
In the old days Phuket made its money from tin mining and from rubber. Still today there are a lot of rubber trees and in fact the tapping of rubber trees is part of various tours. Tin mining has not occurred in a few decades, but with the arrival of mass tourism, Phuket is generating more income for Thailand than it ever has.
Phuket Geography
The island is mostly mountainous with a mountain range in the west of
the island from the north to the south. The highest elevation of the island
is stands at 529 meters above sea level. Phuket has a total area of approximately
570 square kilometers. Phuket is approximately 880 km south of Bangkok.
The island total length, from north to south, is 48 km long and 21 km
wide.
Phuket's topology consists of 70 percent of its total area covered with
mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent
being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island.
UPDATE January 31st, 2012- High season has seen record numbers of tourists flocking in. Lots of Russians about everywhere. The food cart vendors and convenience store owners are seeing a record number of punters. Rental car companies have also been doing a booming business. Now the question remains, will it get slower now that Chinese New Year is over, or will the island still be congested?
